Dennis Barnard Modernist Landscape, Lone Shrub — Signed Pastel & Charcoal, Hutchins Gallery NJ Provenance
A quiet, atmospheric study of a solitary dark shrub anchored against a luminous, mist-softened horizon — warm sandy ground giving way to a soft lavender-cream sky. Echoes of late Turner and the American Tonalists: pigment dragged thin across the open passages, then built up in dense, fibrous scribbles that give the bush a windblown, almost combustive presence. An understated, contemplative work that holds the wall at this scale.
Original mixed media — pastel and charcoal on paper — by Dennis Barnard, signed "D. Barnard" in pencil at the lower right. The technique is disciplined: a charcoal armature builds the dense mass of the shrub, then warm pastel is dragged across the ground plane and sky in long, directional strokes that read as wind, light, and atmosphere all at once. Presented behind glass in a beveled solid wood frame with a deep cream window mat.
Provenance
Ex-collection of the owner of the Robin Hutchins Gallery, Maplewood, New Jersey — a long-running gallery that anchored the South Orange–Maplewood arts corridor from the late 1980s onward. Works from this collection reflect the gallery's focus on regional contemporary artists working in drawing, pastel, and mixed media.
CONDITION
Good. The work itself presents cleanly with strong pigment and no abrasion or media loss on the sheet. Light foxing along the upper-left interior edge of the cream mat (shown in supplemental reference), the frame is loose and would benefit from re-seating, and there is light debris behind the glass. The buyer may wish to have the piece freshened or reframed by their preferred framer.
