Navajo Hand-Carved Kachina Pair — "White Owl" by V. Mitchell & "Chasing Star," Signed

A pair of Navajo-carved kachina figures, each hand-carved from wood, hand-painted, and dressed in fur, feathers, and leather. The White Owl figure features a carved owl mask with spread wings, ringed yellow eyes, a hooked yellow beak, and a thick white fur ruff at the shoulders. The body wears a painted breechcloth with stepped geometric motifs in red, black, and turquoise, accented by a turquoise sash and fringed red moccasins. Underside signed "White Owl / By V. Mitchell / Navajo."

The companion figure, "Chasing Star," stands in mid-stride with a turquoise face mask bearing a black-and-white diamond eye motif, flanked by red tab ears and a dense halo of mottled brown-and-white feathers. A white fur ruff frames the neck above a black tunic; the kilt is painted with stepped cloud and rain-cloud motifs in red, turquoise, white, and black, tied with a red sash. Both hands grasp bundles of split reed prayer sticks. Underside signed "Chasing Star / By " (carver's surname not fully legible). Both figures are mounted on natural cottonwood-root rounds consistent with the Navajo carving tradition.

CONDITION

Good overall. Both figures are intact with bright paint, secure feathers, and stable leather and fur trim. Light handling wear consistent with display; no breaks or losses observed.
