Description

Roger & Marie Kull Tooled Leather Relief Art — Pueblo Pottery Still Life

A signed dimensional leather artwork by Roger and Marie Kull, the husband-and-wife team known for their sculpted and hand-tooled leather paintings depicting Pueblo pottery and desert landscapes. The composition centers on a tipped polychrome Acoma-style olla spilling raw turquoise nuggets onto the sand, with a second broken vessel half-buried in the middle distance and a low mountain range receding to the horizon. The pottery is rendered in deep relief with hand-painted black, cream, and oxblood geometric devices; the surrounding desert is carved, modeled, and burnished into the leather itself, creating shadow and texture that shift with the light.

Acquired from The William Bonney Gallery of Mesilla, New Mexico — Dan & Della McKinney, dealers in fine New Mexico art — giving the piece local Mesilla Valley provenance. The Kulls' work appeals to collectors of who appreciate the unusual medium: applied turquoise chips set into the leather ground reinforce the trompe-l'œil effect. Signed in script "Roger + Marie Kull" at the lower left, set in a deep stepped wood frame with gilt inner liner. No glass — the relief surface is intended to be viewed directly.

Provenance
  • The William Bonney Gallery, Mesilla, New Mexico — Dan & Della McKinney (original gallery card retained with the piece)

CONDITION

Very Good. Scuffing to the wood frame that does not impact the artwork. The leather surface, applied turquoise, and painted detail present cleanly with no remarkable damage.
