Antique American Oak Serpentine-Front Four-Drawer Chest on Casters, c. 1900

An American turn-of-the-century oak bedroom chest with a serpentine bow front, two over two drawer configuration, and shaped apron over square tapered legs riding on the original cast-iron and porcelain casters. The drawer fronts show the kind of dramatic cathedral oak grain that defined late Victorian and early Golden Oak production, paired with pressed-brass Art Nouveau pulls and diamond-form escutcheons. The molded top overhangs a stepped frieze, and the entire case rolls easily on its wheels — a practical detail from an era when bedrooms were rearranged seasonally.

Construction is honest period work: solid oak throughout the case and drawer fronts, dovetailed drawers, and a pine plank back secured with cut nails. The keyholes are fitted with their original stamped-brass escutcheons, though the key is absent. A piece like this lands comfortably as a bedroom chest, an entry console, or a sideboard in a casual dining room — the warm honey tone reads well against both painted and natural-wood interiors.

CONDITION

Good overall with age-appropriate wear. Chipping and splits to the front bottom apron and a split to the back bottom panel. Interior drawer bottoms show old water staining and minor losses. Some hardware shows minor losses to the brass casting. No key present. Drawers operate and casters roll.
