Late Victorian American Platform Rocker with Tufted Velvet Upholstery
A late 19th-century platform rocker in turned hardwood with original coil-spring mechanism, tufted button-back, and rolled, nailhead-trimmed arm pads. The frame is built from ring-turned spindles and stiles capped with acorn finials, set on a sculpted trestle base with line-incised detailing at the feet and crossbar terminals. Brass-capped arm posts, three turned spindles flanking the seat back, and twin iron springs anchored between the seat platform and the stationary base complete the period vocabulary.
The platform rocker — an American innovation of the 1870s and 1880s — replaced the traditional curved runner with a stationary base and sprung seat, allowing rocking without "walking" the chair across the parlor floor or chewing up the carpet. Examples like this one were a fixture of late Victorian sitting rooms across the country, produced by countless midwestern and New England chair shops through the turn of the century. Upholstery presents in a mustard-gold cut velvet with tufted back, plain seat, and dark nailhead borders along the arm pads and seat rail.
CONDITION
Fair. Frame is sturdy and sits well for use. Back of chair is slightly askew/crooked relative to the seat frame. Scuffing and age-appropriate wear throughout the wood; upholstery shows soiling, fading, and light wear consistent with age.
