Franciscan Apple Pattern Oval Platter & Divided Vegetable Bowl, California-Made Earthenware
A two-piece serving set in Franciscan Apple, the embossed dinnerware pattern introduced by Gladding, McBean & Co. in 1940 and produced continuously for decades at the Los Angeles works. The set includes an oval serving platter and a divided oval vegetable bowl, each hand-decorated with the signature red apples, green leaves, and brown branch border over a warm cream ground. The relief-molded rims give the pattern its distinctive sculpted quality — the apples and branches stand proud of the surface, not merely painted on.
Both pieces carry Franciscan backstamps on the underside. The divided bowl bears the earlier "Franciscan / Made in California U.S.A. / Hand Decorated / Oven Safe" mark, while the platter shows the later "Franciscan Earthenware / Made in U.S.A." stamp — common when households built up their Apple service across multiple decades. Apple remains the most collected of the Franciscan patterns, prized for its cheerful palette and the durability of its California earthenware body.
CONDITION
Very Good with no remarkable damage. Glaze is bright and clean on both pieces with no chips, cracks, or staining noted. Light surface wear consistent with gentle table use.
