Description

Franciscan Apple Earthenware Dinnerware, 20-Piece Service for Six

A 20-piece set of Franciscan Apple, the hand-painted California earthenware pattern introduced by Gladding, McBean & Co. in 1940 and produced continuously for decades. The embossed branch border frames each plate with brushwork apples and green leaves over a warm cream ground — one of the most enduring American dinnerware patterns of the twentieth century. The lot includes eight dinner plates, six salad plates, and six tall tumblers, with backstamps spanning multiple production eras.

The set comprises (8) 10.5" dinner plates, (6) 6.25" salad plates, and (6) 5.25" tumblers — a usable everyday service for six with extra dinner plates for entertaining. Backstamps include the earlier "Franciscan Made in California" mark and the later "Franciscan Earthenware U.S.A." mark, indicating pieces accumulated across different periods of production.

CONDITION

Good overall. Light utensil wear and scuffing consistent with use across the plates. Tumblers present cleanly with minor surface wear. No chips or cracks noted.
