Franciscan Apple Earthenware 14" Chop Plate & Luncheon Plate, Two-Era Backstamps
Two pieces of Franciscan Apple, the embossed branch-and-fruit pattern Gladding, McBean & Co. introduced in 1940 at its Glendale, California works. The set pairs a large round chop plate with a luncheon plate, both showing the hand-painted red apples, green leaves, and modeled brown branch border that made Apple one of the most recognized American dinnerware patterns of the twentieth century.
The backstamps span two production eras: one piece carries the early "Franciscan Earthenware" oval mark used from the late 1940s through the mid-1950s, the other the later "Franciscan Made in California" arched mark with date code, used from the mid-1950s onward. Together they document how the same hand-painted pattern carried across generations of the Franciscan line. Suitable for table use or wall display.
CONDITION
Very Good with no remarkable damage. Glaze is bright and the painted decoration remains crisp on both pieces. Light surface wear consistent with careful household use.
