Franciscan Apple Hand-Decorated Earthenware Salad Service, 7 Pieces
Seven-piece salad service in Franciscan Apple, the hand-painted California earthenware pattern introduced by Gladding, McBean & Co. in 1940 and produced continuously for decades. The lot pairs two serving bowls with apple-form salt and pepper shakers and a single wooden serving fork stenciled with a matching apple motif. Backstamps span two generations — one bowl carries the earlier "Franciscan Hand Decorated, Gladding, McBean & Co., Oven-Safe" mark; the other shows the later "Franciscan Earthenware" mark.
Apple remains the most recognizable of the Franciscan embossed patterns, with its raised branch border and hand-brushed red fruit and green leaves on a cream ground. The combination of two bowl sizes, figural shakers, and a themed wooden fork makes this a ready-to-use service rather than a loose accumulation.
CONDITION
Good overall with light scuffing and minor staining consistent with table use. One shaker stopper is stuck inside the shaker. No chips or cracks noted to the bowls.
