Tarahumara (Rarámuri) Pine Needle & Sotol Miniature Basket Collection, 13 Pieces
A collection of thirteen hand-woven baskets from the Tarahumara (Rarámuri) people of the Sierra Madre Occidental in Chihuahua, Mexico. The group includes a large bulbous double-shouldered olla-form basket in pale sotol palm with classic herringbone twill, a nested pair of deep russet-toned baskets with contrasting cream rim braid, a small dark single basket of similar palette, a coiled pine-needle bowl with whipped-stitch construction, and a set of nine miniature twilled baskets in graduated sizes — several with dark accent strands forming geometric step patterns at the rim.
Rarámuri basketry is among the most recognized indigenous craft traditions of northern Mexico, woven primarily from split sotol leaf and occasionally pine needle, with bark or dyed fiber used for contrast. The miniatures — known locally as canastitas — demonstrate the same diagonal-twill technique as full-scale storage baskets, scaled down to thimble proportions. The graduated nesting format is a hallmark of the form, traded at markets throughout Chihuahua and across the border into New Mexico and Texas.
CONDITION
Good overall with age-appropriate wear as shown. Fibers remain pliable with light surface soiling consistent with handling and display. No structural damage; weaves are tight and rims intact across all thirteen pieces.
