Late Victorian Burl Walnut Marble-Top Nightstand with Carved Corbels

A handsome late Victorian-era nightstand in figured walnut with a removable Carrara-style marble top, single dovetailed drawer, and lower cabinet concealing a removable shelf. The case is dressed in book-matched walnut veneers laid in chevron patterns, with a burl walnut center panel on the cabinet door that reads almost like a landscape painting in grain. Carved scrolled corbels flank the door, reeded pilasters frame the sides, and the original brass escutcheon-style pulls remain intact on both the drawer and door.

Pieces like this appeared throughout American and European bedrooms from roughly the 1880s through the turn of the century, paired with marble-top dressers and washstands. The cool marble surface was practical — water pitchers, basins, and oil lamps lived here — and the proportions translate beautifully to modern use as a bedside table, entry stand, or display pedestal. The marble lifts off for transport, and the cabinet interior is fitted in pine with a single removable shelf.

CONDITION

Good with age-appropriate wear throughout. Visible warping to the interior left side of the cabinet; veneer losses and chipping to the front base molding; light scuffs and surface marks to the marble top. Joinery remains sturdy and the drawer and door operate properly.
