Antique Chinese Suanpan 2/5 Bead Abacus with Nickel Hardware

A traditional Chinese suanpan abacus in the classic 2/5 bead configuration — two heaven beads above the reckoning bar, five earth beads below — across thirteen columns. The hardwood frame is finished in deep ebonized black with exposed warm-toned wood at the interior bed, and the corners are reinforced with riveted metal brackets that have mellowed to a cool silver-gray tone consistent with nickel or a nickel-plated alloy. The bead rods are a mixed set: two wood, two metal, and nine remaining of varied composition including aged plastic, giving the field a quietly striped appearance when viewed straight on.

For centuries the suanpan was the working calculator of Chinese merchants, accountants, and scholars, capable of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and even square and cube roots in the hands of a trained user. The 2/5 layout predates the slimmer 1/4 Japanese soroban and remained the standard across mainland shops well into the twentieth century. This example reads as a desk-scale working tool — sized to sit comfortably in front of a shopkeeper — rather than a decorative reproduction.

CONDITION

Good and fully operational. One previous repair to a rod is present, with no other remarkable damage; beads slide cleanly and the frame remains tight at the corners.
