Description

William A. Kolliker "Paso Del Norte" — Signed Borderland Landscape, El Paso

An expressive borderland landscape depicting the historic Pass of the North — the Franklin and Juárez mountain gap that gave El Paso its name and its identity. A towering yucca dominates the foreground, its star-burst crown catching warm light against a drama of storm clouds and slanting desert rain. The middle distance opens onto a wide Chihuahuan basin floor, a ribbon of road threading toward a cluster of settlement, the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Juárez closing the horizon. The loose, gestural brushwork and saturated palette — burnt ochre, raw sienna, charged grays and storm purples — carry the volatile beauty of a desert sky with real conviction.

This is a print after an original watercolor by William A. Kolliker, hand-signed by the artist at lower right — not a plate signature. The printed caption reads "PASO DEL NORTE" from a Watercolor Painted by William A. Kolliker, and the lower left margin carries the presentation line: Presented by the Downtown Rotary Club of El Paso, Texas. Kolliker was a working El Paso–area artist whose watercolors documented the borderland landscape; this edition was produced as a civic presentation piece, lending the work an institutional context specific to the El Paso community. Unframed and matted, ready for framing to the buyer's preference.

Provenance

Produced as a civic presentation edition by the Downtown Rotary Club of El Paso, Texas, as stated in the printed margin. The edition was distributed as a formal keepsake, grounding this print firmly in mid-twentieth-century El Paso civic life.

CONDITION

Very Good with no remarkable damage. Paper is clean and bright with strong color retention. Unframed.
