Description

Edwardian Inlaid Flame Mahogany Dressing Table with Bevelled Swing Mirror, C. 1900

A well-proportioned Edwardian dressing table in solid flame mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) with satinwood banding and boxwood stringing throughout — the restrained ornament that defines quality Sheraton Revival bedroom furniture from roughly 1900 through the 1920s. The breakfront top carries a removable superstructure: a large bevelled swing mirror with arched rectangular plate and shaped crest, mounted on uprights headed by brass urn finials and flanked by two small trinket drawers on bracket platforms over an open shelf. The serpentine bow-front case below presents nine drawers in total — two frieze drawers and two half-width drawers arranged around an arched kneehole, with all drawer fronts banded in matching satinwood stringing and fitted with original brass drop pulls on circular backplates.

All drawers are of dovetail construction, sliding cleanly on their runners, and the case rides on slender square-tapered legs with inlaid stringing terminating in the original brass cup castors. A handwritten paper label affixed to the mirror back reads "C.A. Limore" — possibly a prior owner or retailer. The mirror superstructure lifts free and the top is removable, making this a manageable piece to transport in sections.

CONDITION

Good with age-appropriate wear throughout. The top surface shows scuffs, scratches, water staining, and chipped veneer along the edge banding; one superstructure drawer block shows more significant finish loss and veneer lifting at the corner. The mirror plate has scattered silvering loss concentrated across a portion of the upper half. Case is sturdy, dovetail joints intact, castors original. No key present.
