English Oak Bureau Bookcase with Leaded Glass Doors, c. 1920s
A compact English oak bureau bookcase from the 1920s, combining a leaded-glass upper bookcase with a slant-front secretary desk and two graduated drawers below. The upper section features a pair of doors set with leaded glass in an eight-pane configuration, opening to three adjustable shelves. The slant front drops on brass quadrant stays to reveal a fitted interior of pigeonholes and a writing surface. Quartersawn oak shows pronounced medullary ray figure across the fall front and drawer fronts.
The case rests on turned bulbous front feet with a shaped apron and plain rear stiles. Drawers are dovetailed front and back — a mark of solid period English cabinetwork. Hardware includes original-style nickel and brass bar pulls, and the working lock is fitted with its original key.
CONDITION
Very Good and restored throughout. Lock works and the key is included. Glass shows minor scuffs and a small abrasion to one pane (see supplemental references); leading remains intact. Finish is even with rich color; no remarkable damage to case or drawers.
