Description

Antique Georgian Mahogany Wingback Armchair, Carved Ball & Claw Feet, 19th C.

A substantial antique Georgian wingback armchair built on a generous scale, with rolled arms, pronounced wings, and a tall arched back framed for a deep, enveloping sit. The front legs are carved solid mahogany with acanthus-and-shell knees and terminate in well-defined ball-and-claw feet — the talons drawn tight over the ball, knuckles fully articulated, the finish showing deep patina and gilt highlights consistent with age. Rear legs are simpler cabriole stumps in matching mahogany. The ball-and-claw form places this chair squarely in the Chippendale tradition, a vocabulary dominant in English and American cabinet shops from the 1750s through the early 19th century; the proportions, carving depth, and surface patination confirm a 19th-century origin.

The chair has been reupholstered in a heavy chenille damask with a charcoal ground and raised scrolling foliate motifs in olive and bronze, giving the seat a tapestry-like depth under direct light. A single removable loose seat cushion in a complementary darker tone is included. Scale is a defining feature: the back rises 47 inches, the seat is genuinely roomy at 25.5 inches deep, and the chair comfortably accommodates a tall or large sitter.

CONDITION

Good with signs of use. Light wear and fading to the upholstery along both arms where hands have rested over time; the arm fabric shows pile loss and a lighter tone compared to the back and sides. The rear right foot has a chip to the carved wood. Frame is sturdy and seats firmly; upholstery is otherwise clean and intact.
