Description

Extensole Mahogany Console-to-Dining Extension Table, Federal Style, 1950s–60s

A mahogany extension dining table by the Extensole Corporation of Sparta, Michigan, drawing on Federal-style vocabulary with tapered, reeded legs, a beaded apron, and crossbanded skirt panels accented by ring pulls at each end. Closed, it presents as a handsome console — proportioned and detailed well enough to hold its own in an entry or against a dining room wall. The maker's signature engineering reveals itself when the table opens: four self-stored leaves rise into place and a concealed center leg drops down on a hinged bracket to support the full extended span — no loose inserts to chase down, no awkward third-party hardware to wrangle.

Extensole Corporation built its reputation on this single patented idea, producing self-storing-leaf extension tables from at least the mid-twentieth century onward. The concept targeted the American household that needed to expand for company and contract for everyday life. The underside carries the original blue-and-black Extensole badge reading "Patented Construction — Extensole Corporation, Sparta, Michigan — Extension Tables." The wear on the top is real, but it lives where a tablecloth goes — the base, legs, apron, and all decorative detail are structurally sound, and as a closed console this table shows beautifully.

CONDITION

Fair. The top surface shows heavy use: extensive light scratching and scuffing across multiple panels, a prominent ring stain with finish lifting and cracking, additional water marks, and small impressions and chips scattered across the surface. The wear is concentrated on the dining surface and is effectively concealed in standard table use with a cloth. The base, legs, apron, and extension mechanism are structurally sound; the table opens and closes properly.
