Carved Nephrite Jade Bear with Salmon Figurine
A small hand-carved figurine of a bear clutching a salmon in its jaws, worked in deep spinach-green nephrite jade with a high polish across the rounded body and contrasting lighter-toned fish. The carver has captured the moment of the catch — head lowered, shoulders hunched, the salmon held crosswise with its tail and head extending past the muzzle. Fine incised detail along the salmon's tail fin adds texture against the smooth, sculptural mass of the bear's form.
Nephrite carvings of bears with salmon are a signature subject of the British Columbia and Pacific Northwest lapidary tradition, drawing on both Indigenous iconography and the abundant nephrite deposits of the region. The stone shows natural inclusions and tonal variation throughout, with the lighter, more translucent jade selected for the fish creating a deliberate two-tone composition.
CONDITION
Excellent. No damage noted. High polish is intact across all surfaces with natural inclusions visible within the stone.
