Description

Pair of Mid-Century Folk Art Bottle Cap Figural Serving Caddies, Man & Woman

A charming pair of handmade folk art serving figures constructed from wood, bottle caps, plastic bowls, and googly eyes. Each figure stands on a turned wooden base with stacked bottle-cap arms and legs forming the limbs, a carved wooden torso, and a small wooden head. Plastic bowls serve as both hat and a held basin — the upper bowl crowns the head, the lower bowl is suspended from the figure's outstretched arms by wire hooks and ring pulls. The bottle caps include identifiable bottlers' marks for California Orange, Barq's, and St. Paul, Minnesota brands, dating the construction to the mid-twentieth century.

The male figure wears a cream-painted torso with green button accents and stands on a matching cream base, paired with apple-green bowls. The female figure features a black torso with white button accents, hoop earrings, and a gilt base, paired with turquoise bowls. Both retain hand-painted facial features and their original whimsy intact. Pieces like these were typically made as one-off craft projects or sold at roadside stands and tourist shops in the 1950s–60s, and they survive in pairs only rarely. Unsigned. \

CONDITION

Good overall with no remarkable damage. Light wear to painted surfaces and minor patina to the bottle caps consistent with age. Bowls retain their color with minor scuffing; wire hardware is intact and functional on both figures.
