Description

New Mexican Pine Bench with Carved Pueblo Stepped-Cloud Spindles, Red Paint

A regional New Mexican bench, hand-built from pine and finished in a warm Indian-red paint. The seven back spindles are sawn with the stepped cloud-and-terrace motif drawn from Puebloan iconography — the same silhouette that shapes mission church reredos and adobe parapets across northern New Mexico. The crest rail carries a centered stepped tablet, the apron below the seat is cut with a matching skirt, and the arm terminals are grooved with parallel reeding that echoes the back-slat geometry.

Construction is honest joinery throughout — mortise-and-tenon framing with through-pegs visible at the arm posts, plank seat, and sled-style side stretchers acting as runners. The form belongs to the Spanish Colonial Revival furniture tradition that flourished around Taos and Santa Fe.

CONDITION

Good with honest wear consistent with long use, some of it outdoors. Paint loss and chipping along edges of the seat, arms, and feet; scattered scuffs, dings, and small losses to the painted surface revealing pale wood beneath. Frame is sturdy and joinery is sound. Rustic by design.
