Gunnel Nyman for Nuutajärvi Notsjö Sommerso Bullicante Vase, Emerald Green
A teardrop-form art glass vase attributed to Gunnel Nyman for Nuutajärvi Notsjö, executed in the sommerso technique with a deep emerald green core encased in a thick layer of clear crystal. Thousands of controlled bubbles (bullicante) rise through the colored body in an even, all-over distribution — achieved by pressing the molten gather onto a spiked mold before the outer casing is applied. The clear sommerso layer pools at the base into a heavy, optically refractive foot that magnifies the bubble work above.
Nyman's bullicante work for Nuutajärvi Notsjö in the late 1940s and early 1950s established her as one of Scandinavia's defining voices in studio art glass — a body of work cut short by her death in 1948 at age 37, making surviving attributed examples genuinely sought after. The form, color saturation, and bubble discipline here are consistent with her known production, though the vase is unsigned and unmarked.
