Leonardo da Vinci — 1635 Illustrations Folio, Artabras/Istituto Geografico De Agostini
This substantial folio was originally produced by the Istituto Geografico De Agostini in conjunction with the landmark 1938 Leonardo exhibition in Milan — then re-edited with entirely new illustration plates by Emil Vollmer, the German publisher, in collaboration with the Istituto to produce the edition offered here. Published under the Artabras imprint and printed in Japan by Dainippon Printing Co., Ltd., it was assembled with the stated ambition of being the most complete and authoritative single-volume survey of Leonardo ever produced in English. The translation was prepared and edited by a group of scholars, and the color reproductions — made from freshly struck plates — were praised at publication for their unusual fidelity to the originals.
The scope is broad even by modern reference standards: 1,635 illustrations encompassing Leonardo's major paintings in 20 full-color plates, the full corpus of drawings of consequence, and documentation of the schools he influenced across Europe. The dust jacket carries the sticker noting an additional 30 illustrations from the newly discovered Madrid Codex, placing this edition after the Codex's rediscovery at the Biblioteca Nacional de España in 1966. The jacket imagery — a detail of The Last Supper as it appeared before the post-war restorations — is itself a document of the fresco's condition at mid-century.
CONDITION
Good. The book block is solid and the interior pages are clean. The dust jacket shows wear throughout — tears, surface abrasion, and rubbing to the printed surface consistent with age and handling — but remains intact and present.
