Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks Complete Dell US Run #1–21 — Richard Corben Covers

Twenty-one consecutive volumes of the Dell / Laurel-Leaf US edition of Fighting Fantasy, the entire commercially released American run of Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone's foundational solo adventure gamebook series. Published between November 1983 and 1986, out of print in the United States since Dell folded into Random House in 1999, and consecutively numbered without a gap from #1 Warlock of Firetop Mountain through #21 Trial of Champions. The series sold over twenty million copies worldwide across its full Puffin and Dell lifespan.

The Dell editions stand apart from the UK Puffin run on cover art alone. The first seven volumes — Warlock of Firetop Mountain through Island of the Lizard King — feature original American cover paintings commissioned from Richard Corben, the Heavy Metal magazine fixture and Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame illustrator whose other commercial covers include Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell. Volumes 8 through 13 carry original Dell artwork by Richard Courtney; from Temple of Terror (#14) forward, the Dell line reproduces the original Puffin cover illustrations through to its American finale. The lot also includes the Dell-exclusive House of Hades (#10), the US retitle of Steve Jackson's House of Hell — a variant that exists in no UK printing.

Each volume is a single-player branching narrative with combat statistics, dice-rolled encounters, and a tear-out adventure sheet — the template that Lone Wolf, Endless Quest, and the current solo RPG revival all build from. Two dice, a pencil, and an eraser are the only equipment listed on the back of every volume; the rest is on the page.

Lot includes: #1 The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, #2 The Citadel of Chaos, #3 The Forest of Doom, #4 Starship Traveller, #5 City of Thieves, #6 Deathtrap Dungeon, #7 Island of the Lizard King, #8 Scorpion Swamp, #9 Caverns of the Snow Witch, #10 House of Hades, #11 Talisman of Death, #12 Space Assassin, #13 Freeway Fighter, #14 Temple of Terror, #15 The Rings of Kether, #16 Seas of Blood, #17 Appointment with F.E.A.R., #18 Rebel Planet, #19 Demons of the Deep, #20 Sword of the Samurai, #21 Trial of Champions.

CONDITION

Good overall as a complete reading set; all twenty-one volumes consecutively numbered, cover prices intact, and no detached covers. Heaviest wear is on the earliest cream-cover volumes — #1 Warlock of Firetop Mountain, #2 Citadel of Chaos, and #3 Forest of Doom show pronounced cover wrinkling and surface creasing; #13 Freeway Fighter shows the most edge wear and corner chipping of the lot. Specific flaws: #5 City of Thieves and #18 Rebel Planet carry distinct cover creases; #6 Deathtrap Dungeon is dog-eared at the rear; #7 Island of the Lizard King has a stable previous repair to approximately ten loose pages at the front. Remaining volumes show typical spine creasing, edge wear, and page tanning consistent with 1980s pulp-grade paper stock.
