Description

Mexican Folk Art Hand-Painted Wood & Vinyl Standing Bull Sculpture

A spirited folk art bull rendered in solid wood with leather-like ears, hand-painted in classic dairy-breed coloring — warm caramel brown with irregular cream-white spots across the back and flanks, set off by glossy black horns, hooves, eyes, and muzzle. The carver favored character over anatomical precision: the asymmetrical horns, oversized eyes, and slightly cartoonish proportions give the piece an immediate, expressive presence. Surface paint has chipped and worn through decades of handling, revealing the wood beneath in scattered patches and lending the figure the honest patina that defines well-traveled folk objects.

Hand-carved and painted Mexican animal figures occupy a well-established corner of folk art collecting — a tradition spanning market towns and rural workshops throughout Mexico, where craftspeople produced barnyard and ranch animals as decorative objects, children's toys, and trade goods. This bull is consistent with that tradition in construction, scale, and painting style.

CONDITION

Good with age-appropriate wear throughout. Left horn is chipped at the tip, and paint shows flaking and loss across the white spots, muzzle, eyes, and hooves consistent with decades of handling. Structurally sound; stands firmly on all four legs.
