Mid-Century Nude on Black Velvet, Signed "Glies" — Chiaroscuro Figure Study
A moody chiaroscuro nude painted on black velvet, signed lower left "Glies" in cobalt blue. The figure emerges from deep shadow in warm copper and umber tones — the curve of a back, a bowed head, an arm folded across the knee — set against a slash of cobalt drapery that mirrors the signature's hue. The composition borrows the visual vocabulary of European academic figure studies but executes it in the unmistakable medium of mid-century velvet painting, where the black ground does the work of negative space and the pigment glows where the light catches the pile.
Velvet painting reached its commercial peak from the 1950s through the 1970s, with serious practitioners working alongside the tourist-trade output that gave the medium its kitsch reputation. This piece sits on the studied end of the spectrum — restrained palette, anatomical confidence, no novelty subject matter. Housed in a rustic stained pine frame with gilt liner showing intentional distressing and patina consistent with the era.
CONDITION
Good overall. Scuffing and fading present; a few small spots in the upper center of the velvet field. Frame shows scuffing to the stained wood and crackle to the gilt liner — rustic by design and age-appropriate.
