Description

Art Deco Egyptian Revival Cast Iron Gilt Table / Bench Frame Pair — Winged Goddess & Griffins

A matched pair of cast iron table or bench frames in the Egyptian Revival Art Deco idiom, each built around a central medallion depicting a winged nude goddess figure — consistent with Isis or a Mesopotamian-revival deity — standing within a circular ring and flanked by a pair of crouching heraldic griffins clutching fruit clusters. A rayed star bursts from the base of the medallion, and the composition is framed by the X-crossed legs of the griffins, all terminating in scrolled volutes above the splayed base. The upper portion of each frame is a stepped octagonal arch with sunburst tympanums, arrow-leaf borders, and a hammered peened ground texture throughout. Feet terminate in broad stylized hoof-form pads. The original applied gilt finish is retained across both frames, with selective black-painted accents in the hammered banding — a contrast treatment typical of high-end American Deco cast iron.

Each frame carries the cast inscription "PAT. APPLD. FOR — AS-72" across the lower crossbar, placing the design firmly in the late 1920s patent-pending period. Drilled bolt-holes through the lower medallion center and the crossbar indicate these were engineered to receive a glass, marble, stone, or wood top — or to function as a matched console or bench frame pair. They are sold as bases only; no top is included. The iconography and construction quality place these in the tradition of American foundry work produced for hotel lobbies, restaurants, and high-end residential interiors during the Deco revival of the late 1920s and early 1930s.

CONDITION

Good. Original gilt finish is largely intact with light rubbing to high points and minor paint losses at the feet exposing dark iron beneath. Black-accented hammered bands show expected wear. Both frames are structurally sturdy with no cracks or repairs noted. Mounting holes are open and clean.
