Antique Iron-Strapped Pine Citrus Crate, Stenciled "W.R.E. Co." — Early 20th C.
A substantial two-compartment citrus crate built from pine planks reinforced with riveted iron strapping at every corner, along the upper rails, and at the mid-body divider. Cut-out hand grips at each end and a central divider allowed the loaded crate to be carried with weight balanced between compartments — the standard configuration for grove and packing-shed work. One end panel carries a bold stenciled mark reading "W.R.E. Co."a regional citrus packing or produce cooperative active in the early 20th century.
Today the piece functions equally well as a low side table in its horizontal orientation or — flipped on end, as shown — as a two-cubby wall shelf with genuine bones.
CONDITION
Good overall. Wood planks display dark watermark staining, surface scratches, and minor checking consistent with age and working use — the handle cutout on one end shows additional splitting and edge loss at the grain. Structure is sturdy and intact, with no loose or missing strapping.
