Hand-Carved Wood Mask & Fernwood P'naret Gable Ornament, Pair

A pair of hand-carved wall hangings in contrasting materials and traditions. The larger piece is an elongated mask carved from a single solid block of wood, with a domed forehead, deeply incised brow, pierced triangular eyes, a long ridged nose, and an open mouth above a diamond-patterned chin. Sawtooth notching runs the length of both side edges, and a yellow hanging cord remains threaded at the crown.

The smaller piece is a Fernwood P'naret gable ornament — a carved fernwood figure with stacked brow ridges, rounded cheeks, a prominent nose, and a pendant chin lobe, shaped in the elongated silhouette characteristic of traditional P'naret architectural carvings. The dense, fibrous texture of the fernwood gives the surface a richly tactile, almost woven appearance quite unlike any hardwood carving. Both pieces are unsigned and undated.

CONDITION

Good overall. The larger wooden mask has paint overspray to the face along with minor surface losses and edge wear consistent with age. The fernwood gable ornament shows light surface debris caught in the fibrous texture and minor traces of red pigment near the crown.
