Description

Trio of Early 20th Century Cast Iron Floral Basket Doorstops, Polychrome Paint

A grouping of three cast iron flower basket doorstops, each retaining original polychrome paint and showing the honest wear of a century of household use. The largest features a tall arched handle finished with a tied bow, the basket woven in low relief and brimming with cabbage roses and clustered blossoms in cream, yellow, and green. The middle example presents nasturtium-style blooms in coral, pink, yellow, and blue spilling from a striped tub on a scalloped oval base. The smallest is a footed handled basket form with mounded flowers in green, blue, yellow, and coral over a tan basketweave body.

Flat-back cast iron doorstops in floral basket forms were a fixture of American homes from roughly the 1910s through the 1930s, produced by foundries including Hubley, Bradley & Hubbard, Albany Foundry, and Wilton. No legible foundry marks were located on any of the three; faint cast numerals are present on the verso of the middle basket but are not conclusively attributable. Sold as a three-piece lot.

CONDITION

Good overall with age-appropriate wear across all three. Paint loss is throughout, heaviest on the largest basket where the cream ground has worn to dark iron across the flower heads and base. Edge chipping and scattered surface oxidation are present. No breaks or repairs noted; all three stand squarely.
