Anglo-Indian Carved Hardwood Folding Octagonal Side Table with Brass Inlay
An Anglo-Indian folding side table featuring a deeply carved circular top and an eight-panel collapsible base, executed in the late 19th to early 20th-century tradition of Hoshiarpur and Kashmiri export work. The 1" thick top is densely worked with concentric bands of grapevine, leaves, and stylized blossoms surrounding a central medallion of brass inlay rendered as a scrolling floral spray. The octagonal base folds flat on iron hinges, each panel pierced and carved with leafy vines over a punch-decorated ground.
Tables of this form were produced for both the domestic Indian market and Western export through the late colonial period, valued for their portability and the labor-intensive depth of their relief carving. The folding base breaks down flat for convenient transportation, making the form a longstanding favorite for use as an occasional or drinks table.
CONDITION
Fair. Finish wear throughout with chipping to carved high points and edges. Several inlaid leaves are absent from the central brass medallion. One hinge is missing its pin.
