Description

Pair of Moroccan Koummya Daggers with Carved & Inlaid Wood Scabbards

A matched pair of Moroccan koummya — the iconic curved dagger of the Maghreb, worn at the waist by Berber and Arab men from the Atlas Mountains to the coastal cities. Each features a steel blade with engraved decoration along the spine and fuller, a forged steel quillon with rolled terminals, and a hook-pommel wood hilt secured by a brass collar. The scabbards follow the classic upturned-tip silhouette, fitted with brass throat and chape mounts.

The pair differs deliberately in finish: one is elaborately decorated with chip-carved geometric panels, brass pin inlay, scrollwork, and red inlay roundels, while its companion is plainly finished with incised diamond motifs to the pommel and minimal scabbard ornament. Koummya like these were produced throughout the 19th and 20th centuries as both functional sidearms and ceremonial dress accessories, and remain among the most recognizable forms of North African edged weaponry.

CONDITION

Good overall. Blades have been previously sharpened and show light oxidation and surface marks consistent with age and use. One scabbard is missing its central brass band; the plainer scabbard shows a glue or repair seam mid-length. Wood, carving, and inlay on the decorated example remain crisp.
