Description

French Art Deco Seated Lady & Borzoi Sculpture, 1920s–30s

A striking French Art Deco figural group depicting an elegant cloche-capped woman in flowing drapery seated alongside a watchful Borzoi, the pair facing one another across a long rectangular plinth. The composition is classic of the period — a fashionable Parisienne paired with the era's most stylish hound — rendered in a two-tone patinated finish that contrasts deep verdigris green on the dog and headpiece against the dark blue-black robe and base. Cast in resin and finished to imitate patinated bronze, the figure carries the stylized linework, geometric dress trim, and elongated lines that defined the decorative sculpture of the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Pieces of this type were produced in large numbers by French ateliers for the middle-class market following the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs, often after designs by sculptors such as Demêtre Chiparus, Uriano, and Salvatore Melani. This example is unsigned, but draws directly from that vocabulary, with the Borzoi — the favored breed of the era's fashion plates — as a central decorative motif. The long horizontal format was designed to sit atop a mantel, sideboard, or console.

CONDITION

Good overall. Several chips to the paint and finish are present, most noticeably along the base edges, the corner of the plinth, and around the feet of both figures where small losses expose the lighter substrate beneath. Surface scuffs and minor abrasions throughout consistent with age. The sculpture displays well at viewing distance.
