Chinese Carved Hardwood Plant Stand, Marble Top — Prunus & Bird
Late Qing Chinese export plant stand in carved hardwood with a circular inset marble top framed by a beaded gallery. The deeply pierced apron is worked with magpie-and-prunus — a perched bird among flowering plum branches — a classic Chinese pairing symbolizing joy and the arrival of spring. The motif continues onto the cabriole legs, where carved blossoming branches descend from shoulder to scrolled toe.
Four shaped legs are joined by a carved X-form stretcher centered with a floral boss. The underside retains original workshop assembly marks in painted Chinese characters — period inventory notations used by Cantonese carving workshops to register matching components during construction.
CONDITION Good. Age-appropriate wear throughout, with surface scratches to the marble top consistent with long-term use. Previous repair present and stable.
