Inlaid Davenport Desk & Regency Brass-Inlay Side Chair

A late Victorian English Davenport desk in the Sheraton revival manner, executed in light walnut with extensive satinwood marquetry and ebonized stringing. The sloped writing surface retains its original green tooled leather with gilt anthemion and floral border. The hinged stationery compartment above opens to seven divided compartments fitted on original brass hinges. The writing slope itself lifts on a brass quadrant stay to reveal a fitted interior concealing two small drawers and additional storage; a pull-out writing slide rides beneath.

The case features four dovetailed drawers along the right side fitted with original cast brass swag handles and pierced backplates, balanced by four faux drawer fronts on the left flanking a central oval satinwood paterae of sunburst design. Inlaid quarter-fans appear at the corners throughout — hallmarks of the Sheraton revival, c. 1890–1910. Carved scroll corbels support the projecting writing slope, and the plinth base rides on original brass castors.

The lot also includes an English Regency mahogany side chair, c. 1815–1830, with a reeded cresting rail inset with a gilt brass anthemion plaque flanked by carved rosette terminals. The horizontal central splat features acanthus carving centered by a circular gilt brass roundel. Striped green-and-cream silk upholstery covers the over-stuffed seat, raised on sabre legs.

CONDITION
Good. Sturdy throughout with age-appropriate wear — visible scuffs, chips, and use marks consistent with age. The chair shows staining to the seat fabric and an area of wood loss along the cresting rail; desk lock function untested, key included.
