Description

Hand-Painted Russian Matryoshka Nesting Dolls, St. Petersburg Scenes, Set of 7

Set of seven hand-painted lacquered wood nesting dolls depicting St. Petersburg architectural landmarks within elaborate gilt cartouches. The largest doll features the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, with subsequent dolls illustrating the Rostral Columns and Old Stock Exchange, a winged griffin on the Bank Bridge, the Admiralty, the Peter and Paul Fortress, and a small sailing ship motif on the innermost figure. Each kokoshnik-clad maiden wears teardrop earrings against a deep mahogany ground enriched with cobalt florals, gold filigree scrollwork, and burnished gilt halos.

Signed in Cyrillic on the underside of the largest doll, reading "Сделано в России" (Made in Russia) followed by the artist's name, appearing to read "Гришкевич" (Grishkevich).

CONDITION

Excellent. Lacquer finish is bright and glossy across all seven dolls with crisp painted detail and intact gilding. No notable chips, losses, or paint wear observed.
