Spanish Colonial Carved Saints Console — Artes de Mexico Style
A Spanish Colonial Revival console cabinet drawing on medieval ecclesiastical vocabulary — seven hand-carved saint or apostle figures stand beneath Gothic pointed arches with trefoil and rosette tracery. Each bearded figure is crowned with a gilded halo and robed in polychrome reds, greens, blues, and silver-toned washes, the composition reading as a procession of saints in the manner of medieval Spanish cathedral choir stalls and carved retablos.
Solid wood construction throughout, fitted with hand-wrought iron strap hinges, decorative escutcheons, and forged drop-pull closures. Three independent doors open to interior storage compartments, the case set on a trestle base with stepped sledge feet. The carving treatment, polychrome palette, and ironwork are consistent with mid-20th century Mexican workshop production in the manner of Artes de México Internacionales, S.A. — the Mexico City workshop active c. 1940s–1970s whose Spanish Colonial Revival furniture was exported widely to the American Spanish Revival market.
CONDITION Good. Polychrome and gilding remain visually strong across all seven figures, with paint losses, edge wear, and rubbing to halos and raised carving consistent with age. Surface scratches and scuffs to the top, light scuffing to the lower edges of the sledge feet, and oxidation to the iron hardware throughout.
