Description

Pietra Dura Coffee Table — Baroda Marble, Campaign Iron Base

Substantial rectangular coffee table with an Indian pietra dura marble inlay top on a Campaign-style patinated iron base. The Baroda green marble field is inlaid with a bold geometric composition in rosso, nero, and crema marbles — concentric lozenges, radiating triangular wedges, and a central diamond medallion framed by stepped cream banding. The marble-clad slab is removable, seated within a recessed iron frame supported by four cylindrical column legs with cast bronze-tone foliate capitals, joined by X-form stretchers centered front and back by a gilt rosette medallion. Turned bun feet.

The inlay top is in the Agra–Baroda tradition of parchin kari (also called pachchikari), the Mughal marble inlay technique used at the Taj Mahal and carried forward by Agra-region artisans. Indian inlay tops of this character were widely sourced by Western decorator firms — Maitland-Smith and Marquis Collection of Beverly Hills among them — and fitted to Continental-style iron bases for the U.S. designer trade through the 1980s and 1990s. The Campaign-derived removable construction breaks the piece into two transportable components, a meaningful detail at 400 lb total. Statement-scale presence suited to a formal living room, library, lobby, or designer interior. Unmarked.

CONDITION

In very good condition overall. The marble inlay top shows light surface wear and scattered mineral deposits across the stone — visible as dull or hazy patches — consistent with age and use; no chips, cracks, or losses to the inlay stones. The iron base retains its applied patinated finish with warm copper undertones showing through, consistent with the intended aged-bronze effect.
