Attrib. Laurel Lucite & Chrome MCM Lamp — Porthole Cube Base
A space-age modernist table lamp attributed to Laurel Lamp Mfg. Co., executed in clear Lucite and polished chrome. The form is uncompromising: a tall rectilinear Lucite column rises from a substantial chrome cube plinth, with a recessed and textured circular porthole cut into one face of the base revealing a reflective interior that catches light from below. A slim chrome stem ascends through the column to a square cream-fabric shade, completing a piece that reads as much as sculpture as lighting.
Laurel Lamp Mfg. Co. of Newark, New Jersey (1946–1981) built its reputation on collaborations with designers including Maurizio Tempestini, Pierre Cardin, Richard Barr, and Harry Balmer, producing some of the most distinctive American modernist lighting of the postwar era. This lamp belongs to Laurel's 1970s Space Age vocabulary — clean geometry, industrial materials, and sculptural negative space. Attribution is based on direct visual comparison to documented Laurel examples; this lamp is unmarked. Tested and fully functional, wired with a 3-way switch for three lighting levels.
This lamp is unmarked.
CONDITION
Good. Fully functional and tested. Chrome base shows scratching, and the shade has dents along the sides as shown in the photos.
