Description

Blackbeard's Revenge & Cutty Sark 1869, Pair Tall Ship Models

Two wooden tall ship display models — the larger identified as Revenge, the famous brigantine commanded by the pirate Edward Teach (Blackbeard) from 1717 until his death in battle in 1718, and the smaller as the Cutty Sark, the legendary British composite clipper launched at Dumbarton, Scotland in 1869 and celebrated as one of the fastest sailing vessels of the tea and wool trade era. The Revenge presents a broad-beamed hull in warm natural wood tones with black pinstripe and cream waterline, three masts carrying cream-and-taupe striped canvas sails set full on wooden yardarms, a decorative stern gallery with painted blue panels, period-correct netting at bow and stern, miniature brass cannon barrels, carved grate hatch covers, and turned black-painted stanchions supporting the hull above a varnished oak plinth with brass nameplate. The Cutty Sark renders the clipper's distinctive black-over-red hull with white waterline band, three masts with plain white striped canvas sails, a suspended anchor on gold chain, and a small cast metal anchor detail at the bow — all on a black-painted rectangular base with brass nameplate reading "CUTTY SARK / 1869."

Both models carry working-style rigging with wooden deadeyes strung on cord shrouds, multiple ratlines, and individually fitted yardarms. The rigging density on the Revenge is notably elaborate for a production model of this scale, with bead-style wooden blocks at mast junctions visible in close-up reference photography; the Cutty Sark shows a grey-painted deck with copper-tone rail stanchions and finely rendered belaying-pin arrangements.

CONDITION

Good overall display condition; both models remain intact on their original stands with nameplates secure and legible. Glue remnants are visible at mast bases and several rigging tie-off points on the Revenge, and one maintop platform shows paint loss and adhesive residue consistent with original factory assembly rather than damage. Light handling wear to sails and minor cord loosening in the standing rigging of both vessels.
