Description

Sculptors Guild Tuxedo Gentleman Mirror Wall Sculpture 1984 Art Deco

Life-size Art Deco-revival wall sculpture by Sculptors Guild Ltd. of St. Louis, depicting a faceless gentleman in top hat and tails leaning against a mirrored pedestal column. Cut and reverse-painted glass panels — black tuxedo, white shirt and gloves, gold cufflink accent, full-silvered pedestal — are mounted to a shaped wood backing for wall display. At 89 inches tall, the figure greets guests at eye level: an entryway statement piece purpose-built for a restaurant, supper club, speakeasy bar, hotel lobby, or event venue. Verso bears the maker's label, "Sculptors Guild Ltd., 10180 Page Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63132, © 1984," alongside factory installation instructions reading "Hang Only From Provided Hooks. Use No Wire. Mirror Must Rest On Floor."

Sculptors Guild produced these oversized figural mirror works through the 1980s for designer showrooms, hotel lobbies, and high-end residential interiors. The faceless tuxedoed dandy is a direct nod to Erté and the Art Deco illustrators driving the style's commercial revival in this period. A period 1984 example at this scale is uncommon — most surviving Sculptors Guild figural mirrors are 30 to 40 inches, sized for above a console or vanity. This one is built to stand on the floor and own a wall.

CONDITION Fair. The mirrored pedestal column has a significant fracture across one face with hanging shards, and some glass elements may be missing from that section — the broken panel can be replaced locally through Art Glass in Las Cruces. Adhesive residue is visible behind the glass on several panels, and reverse paint loss is present at multiple locations on the black tuxedo and hat areas, concentrated at the feet, hat brim, and right shoulder.
