Description

Hand-Carved Limestone Cubist Totem — Monumental 68" After Csaky

A monumental hand-carved limestone sculpture composed of four solid stone sections — a sweeping crescent, a rounded slab, and a wedge-form column rising from a rectangular plinth — assembled into a stylized totemic figure standing nearly five-foot-nine. The upper composition carries an all-over claw-chisel texture, the dense stippled toolwork of direct carving, contrasting against the broader weathered surface of the integral base. Cream limestone throughout, with the soft surface mottling that only develops on real stone over years of display.

The composition follows the lineage of Joseph Csaky's 1920 Tête in the Kröller-Müller Museum — the same interlocking geometric vocabulary that placed Csaky alongside Archipenko, Lipchitz, and Zadkine at the founding of Cubist sculpture. An original studio work in solid stone, not a cast or commercial reproduction. The four-section construction breaks down for transport and reassembles on site for entry courtyard, gallery interior, or sculpture-garden installation.

CONDITION Good with outdoor signs of display. Surface mottling and minor edge softening on the plinth base consistent with weathering; the upper sections retain their crisp claw-chisel toolwork throughout. All four sections intact with no visible cracks, chips, or structural losses.
