Detecto NY Atomic Starburst Gold Quilted Vinyl Demilune Hamper MCM

Someone's 1960s bathroom was an absolute mood — and this Detecto New York demilune hamper is the proof. The half-round steel body wears a head-to-toe suit of embossed gold quilted vinyl, cinched top and bottom with gleaming brass-tone banding and flanked by looping brass carry handles, all beneath a plump padded vinyl lift lid. The pièce de résistance: a polished atomic starburst pin winks from the diamond-tufted front like it just got back from the World's Fair and isn't sorry about it.

Inside, the gold-painted steel interior sits above a masonite base, and the underside of the lid carries a crisp "DETECTO NEW YORK" maker's stamp — because even the laundry hamper had credentials. Detecto, better known for their commercial scales, moonlighted gloriously in Atomic Age bath accessories, selling this sort of unapologetic glamour through national department stores at the height of America's space-age fever dream.

CONDITION

Very Good with no remarkable damage. Brass banding shows light tarnish and minor scuffing consistent with its decades of excellent service, and the vinyl lid surface carries faint wear. The starburst accent, hinges, and side handles are all present, intact, and fully original.
