Fred Harman Original Red Ryder Daily Strip — September 2, 1957
Original pen-and-ink daily comic strip art by Fred Harman (1902–1982), creator of Red Ryder, signed and dated "9-2" at lower left of the third panel. The strip is hand-noted "Monday Sept-2/57" and numbered "344" in pencil at the top margin, with panel number "37" along the left edge. Three panels carry the storyline through Mexico, featuring Red Ryder rebuffing a marriage proposal while Little Beaver, in the central close-up, thinks "Me gus-dusted! Want to go back home!" Harman's signature high-contrast brushwork — dense blacks, silhouetted figures, and confident chiaroscuro — is on full display.
Harman produced Red Ryder from 1938 into the early 1960s, and the strip at its peak ran in some 750 newspapers with a readership in the tens of millions. Presented under glass in a black wood frame with black mat.
CONDITION
Good overall. Toning to the board consistent with age, scattered foxing and minor handling soiling in the margins, and a small paste-up or correction patch visible at the lower edge of panel one. Ink remains crisp and the image area is unaffected; not examined out of frame.
