Danish Silver Repoussé Hand Mirror & Comb Set, Pastoral Village Scene
A two-piece Danish silver vanity set comprising a circular hand mirror and matching comb mount, both worked in high repoussé with a lively pastoral village scene of figures gathered around a wash barrel, a peaked-cap onlooker, a small dog, and timbered cottages set against dense foliage. The mirror's reverse carries the full tableau while the obverse holds a beveled looking glass within a polished silver bezel; the openwork handle pairs a scrolling rosette cartouche with an acanthus-and-bead pendant in the Danish skønvirke idiom. The comb features a tortoiseshell-pattern tooth plate fitted with a foliate silver crest, paired with a separately mounted repoussé crescent depicting the same village scene mirrored across a central cottage door.
Marked DENMARK with an accompanying hallmark on the mirror reverse.
CONDITION
Very Good overall, with crisp repoussé detail and no losses to the openwork. The mirror glass shows light surface haze and minor flecking consistent with age; the silver carries an even oxidized patina across the recesses. As noted by the consignor: "We'll leave the polishing to you."
