Rosenthal Studio-Linie Porcelaine Noire Cylinder Vase, 19"H
Tall cylinder vase from Rosenthal's Studio-Linie Porcelaine Noire collection, produced by the historic Bavarian porcelain house founded in Selb, Germany in 1879. The exterior is unglazed matte black biscuit porcelain, entirely covered in a dense incised linear relief — fine parallel grooves that flow, braid, and converge in sweeping organic currents across the full height of the form. The effect is strongly sculptural, reading differently as ambient light shifts across the surface. The interior carries a glossy jet-black glaze, a hallmark contrast of the Porcelaine Noire line. Rosenthal launched Studio-Linie in 1961 as a design-forward imprint commissioning work from leading architects and designers; Porcelaine Noire pieces within the line — with their tactile matte exteriors — became especially sought after in the 1970s and 1980s. The base bears the Rosenthal Porcelaine Noire crown backstamp in white and the yellow oval Studio-Linie mark.
CONDITION
Very Good overall. The matte biscuit exterior is intact with no chips, cracks, or losses observed; fine speckling visible in the relief channels is consistent with the unglazed porcelain body rather than damage. Light shelf dust present in the deeper incised grooves.
