Jaguar Head Wall Sculpture, Hand-Carved Wood, Mexican Folk Art
Hand-carved wood wall sculpture depicting a snarling jaguar — bared fangs, pricked ears, and boldly incised brow, muzzle, and eye sockets command attention from any angle. Worked from a single solid block and hollowed at the back, the piece is consistent with the carving tradition of workshops active in Michoacán, Guerrero, and Oaxaca during the mid-to-late 20th century, where artisans produced large-scale animal sculptures for the export and tourist trade. The warm honey-tan surface retains visible adze and gouge marks throughout, and the natural tonal contrast between the lighter outer carving and the darker hollowed interior adds considerable depth. A wire hanger is fitted at the upper interior for wall display.
CONDITION
Good overall with no structural damage or active splitting. Paint transfer is noted on the crown of the head, and minor surface checking and exposed grain are present along the hollowed interior walls — both consistent with age and the nature of the material.
