Description

Stephen Schlanser Studio Art Glass Vase, Signed & Dated 1991

A confident example of Chicago-based studio glass artist Stephen Schlanser's sculptural work, this tall cylindrical vase is signed and dated "Schlanser '91" to the underside of the base. Schlanser studied at the Illinois Institute of Technology and built his reputation through the 1980s and 1990s producing architecturally influenced studio glass that bridges functional vessel and pure sculpture. The body rises in pale aqua-tinted crystal — smooth, polished, and optically clear — and is topped by a dramatically diagonal angled cut that creates an oval opening tilted sharply off-axis, giving the piece its strong modernist presence. The base is a separate chunky slab of cast aqua glass, its surfaces worked with deep chiseled faceting that reads as fractured ice or eroded stone, anchoring the refined cylinder with a deliberately raw counterpoint.

CONDITION

Excellent — no chips, cracks, or repairs noted. There are imperfections to inner lip, the chiseled base retains full intentional character. Interior of the vessel is clean.
