Art Deco Ebonized Wood Document Box with Stylized Lyre Motif
An Art Deco document or stationery box featuring a hinged lid finished in glossy black lacquer over wood, dramatized by a stylized lyre motif: six parallel chrome strings rise from a polished metal bridge to a circular medallion enameled in coral red and engraved with a fanning floral spray. Stepped chrome banding wraps the lower case, flanked by ribbed cherry-red Bakelite handles at either end — a textbook vocabulary of late-1920s to 1930s modernism.
The lid lifts on a long piano hinge to reveal a clean ebonized interior with a flip-down clasp plate. No maker's mark observed.
CONDITION
Good overall, with honest age-appropriate wear consistent with the period. Finish loss and rubbing along the lower case sides expose the wood beneath, light surface scratches are visible across the lacquered lid, and the chrome and enameled medallion remain bright and intact.
