Custard & Uranium Glass Souvenir Set — Pelican Lake WI / Belgrade MN
Two-piece souvenir set in custard glass — the uranium-bearing variety that fluoresces brilliant chartreuse under UV — comprising a creamer marked "Pelican Lake, Wis." and a tumbler marked "Souvenir / Belgrade, Minn." Both pieces are pressed in the Rose Diamond and Peg pattern, featuring crosshatched diamonds and fan motifs around the lower body with raised button-peg bosses at the diamond intersections. Each carries hand-painted enamel rose decoration: the creamer with a full cabbage rose and trailing foliage in deep pink and green beneath cursive gilt script, the tumbler with a matching rose flanking the Gothic-lettered place name. The creamer retains a gilt rim band; the tumbler's rim is ungilded. The Rose Diamond and Peg mold was among those produced by Ohio and West Virginia glasshouses — Northwood, Jefferson, and Heisey from roughly 1898 through 1915.
Pelican Lake is a resort community in Oneida County, Wisconsin; Belgrade is a small agricultural town in Stearns County, Minnesota. The pairing of two unrelated place names strongly suggests these were acquired separately and assembled as a set over time. Custard glass in this satin-finished, pale yellow uranium formulation is distinct from the brighter canary vaseline glass of the same era; under longwave UV the fluorescence is unmistakable.
CONDITION
Excellent overall — no chips, cracks, or repairs detected on either piece. Hand-painted enamel rose decoration remains bright and fully intact on both pieces. Minor wear to the gilt finish on the rims, lettering, and raised peg bosses is consistent with age and normal handling.
