Description

Cast Iron Horse Group: 1925 D.A.L. Pegasus Bookend, Hook Rack & Double Horse

Three cast iron horse pieces united by material, subject, and decorative intent. The anchor of the group is a single 1925 Decorator Art League (D.A.L.) Pegasus bookend — a rearing winged horse rendered in bold high relief against a rounded-rectangular ground, with the foundry cipher and date clearly cast into the face. D.A.L. figural bookends from this period are a collected category in their own right, and the Pegasus subject is among the most visually striking in the line. The rocking horse is a flat cast iron silhouette with engraved mane and saddle detail on the front face, four hooks along the curved rocker base, and two mounting holes at the saddle — a wall rack that functions equally as American country decorative ironwork. The third piece is a stylized double-headed horse figure on a rectangular plinth, finished in heavily chipped green paint over a cream ground, its abstracted form sitting comfortably alongside both folk art and mid-century decorative sculpture.

All three share cast iron construction, equine subject matter, and the kind of honest surface age that comes from decades of use — a ready-made thematic grouping for a mantel, study, or tack room shelf.

CONDITION

Good overall with age-appropriate wear across all three pieces. The D.A.L. Pegasus bookend shows uniform surface oxidation with intact, well-defined relief detail on the front face and heavy rust patina on the reverse. The rocking horse hook rack carries a dark patina with surface rust along the rocker, all four hooks present and intact. The double horse figure retains approximately 40% of its original green paint with significant flaking exposing the cream undercoat throughout.
